im thinking of joining a gym. anyone tell me the best machines to ease into. wanting to tone up, not bulk up. not liking the saggy skin I'm seeing.

Gyms typically try to set up machines in the order they recommend using the machines, circuit style. This tends to have machines for the same bodyparts adjacent to each other. The gym owner or attendant can show you how to use each machine; pick the ones you feel comfortable with and start with the lowest setting for the first week or two, then gradually up the weight. After you get comfortable with your initial selections, try adding some others. Unless you have a VERY compelling reason, never skip legs! The large muscles in legs yield the most metabolic benefit for your training time, resulting in better overall improvement. That said, always include rest days between training days for any muscle group. And don't jerk; count two second from bottom to top, then two seconds from top to bottom of the lift. Once you get acclimated to the process counting/ timing won't be necessary. Some people recommend counting to four.

Depends on your needs, goals & preferences really. Experimenting is the best way, see what you like best, what works best for you, & how well you’re progressing towards your goal. Usually some combination of free weights, cables & machines geared towards working with whatever your routine is would provide you with options to choose from, & then you can reconfigure what exercise combined with what type of resistance equipment you feel most comfortable with that also produces the results you’re looking for. There are many variations & alternatives for multitudes of exercises with multiple types of equipment, just depends on what you like best.

Best thing to start out with is working on perfecting form, not lifting with your “ego”, workout intelligently, & everything else will fall into place.
