Why do they call it "cheating" when you fail to follow a diet plan? It's not like you are getting away with something. If you cheat on a test, you get a better score (unless you get caught). If you cheat at cards, you get more money. If you cheat death, you live longer.

If you "cheat" on your diet, you STILL GAIN WEIGHT! There's no such thing as cheating when it comes to eating. If no one sees that extra muffin I ate, it still ends up on my thighs the next day. Who do I think I am fooling? I need to start calling things as they really are. "Indulgence" would be the nice word. "Foolishness" or "Recklessness" would be closer to the truth. And how ironic that something I perceive as being nice to myself, actually ends up being the opposite. So the next time I am feeling sorry for myself and rationalizing that a muffin will be just what I need to feel better or that I deserve the muffin, I must instead think, "Be nice to yourself and do not eat foods that are toxic to your health."

I still have a long way to go but today I am thankful to be as far along as I am on this road to health. It's a much better place than I was when I started.

That is a really good point! My daughter makes fun of the name of this site, she whispers, "Shhhhh my fat is a secret, don't tell anyone."

So is it still cheating, or indulgence, if it's a "lifestyle change" instead of a diet? If I liked muffins I would find a way to make them fit into my lifestyle, even if I had to bake them myself and they were blueberry bran or pumpkin whole wheat, you get the idea. No food you like should be off limits forever IMO, but then again I'm not a successful weight loser like you so perhaps I should rethink that. Hmm...food for thought. Heehee.

I don't mean to say that the muffin itself is a cheat, only that eating it when you know it will take you over your RDI for the day is foolish.

Since you only ate one I don't think that is a bad thing..now if you ate..say 5..now that would be a little over board..Don't fret over it...:O)

This is a super point to make, for so many of us. When we're celebrating, we essentially punish ourselves by eating junk. AND when we are down, we comfort ourselves the same way. It would be nice to have a "cheat" that was actually a cheat, huh? Like a super delish (yet strangely calorie free) chocolate cake. lol. Yeah right.

Rubie-sue, that is too funny! Kingkeld, I like the way you think. Bren, I actually had 2, they weren't as good as I thought they would be AND they seem to have halted my weight loss streak. This morning I threw the rest in the trash. I have to remember to be nicer to myself from now on.

I like your take on the "cheating" issue, and it brought to mind an incident, about a year ago. While at a family gathering, at my brother's house, wherein there is usually a lot of, incredible, food; I mentioned to him that though I may be falling off the, low carb, wagon, for a day or two, I'd get back on track; he said that the way I was enjoying myself, and I was, I was actually jumping off the wagon. LOL And again, admittedly, I was; but as time goes by, I'm having more successes than failures in this area. As long as we never give up, then victory is enevitable, it just may take a little longer, as we "remember to be nicer..", to ourselves, and say No, more often than we say yes, to temptations. Have a great weekend. :-)

I think it's called cheating because you are spending time with the wrong foods--kind of like cheating on a spouse. The best way to "not cheat" is to think of it as a lifestyle change and if the muffin is something that you absolutely think you need on occasion then plan for it in your meal plan.
