Went out last night for a ride an had no energy at all. I felt so bad I just turned around after 15 minutes and rode home. Ended up with a half hour, seven mile ride. Not worthless, but not up to what I've been doing lately.
When I got home I had a bigger dinner than usual, then went to bed at 8pm. I woke up feeling much better.
Since I felt better today so I gave it another shot. I picked a route that I hoped was less hilly than what I've been typically doing. It's hilly around where I live so I often end up with nearly 50 feet of climbing per mile which is quite a bit. It's been affecting my average speed which is usually ends up being in the low 14 mph range. I really feel like I should be capable of 15-16 mph by now.
Anyhow, my route ended up having a little under 30 feet per mile of climbing and I was able to manage solidly over 15 mph for a 17 mile ride. I was able to push pretty hard for the whole ride too and I'm not dead now that I'm done. Much better than yesterday!
I guess you just have to listen to what your body is telling you. A few extra calories and extra rest once in a while is a good way to recharge the batteries.
