Down a little bit and under 57 again. Fast day today, breakfast prepared to take with me and evening meal planned for a total of 494 calories for the day.
Weigh-in tomorrow and then I'm away for the weekend, training examiners in the next city. I'll be staying with a friend, eating in on Friday night and out on Saturday. I'm more worried about the lunches as traditionally the host venue orders in pizza for us - it's not even very good pizza and I don't like it much so I need to find a way round it. Maybe I can manage on fruit and a handful of nuts? There's a thought. Second idea is to send somebody up to starbucks for a wholewheat sandwich of some kind and a decent coffee (I can't stand instant coffee) - still high in calories but not as high as pizza and calories I'll enjoy. So two alternatives in mind, and a mantra already mentally started - I willl not eat pizza, I will not eat pizza....

Once again, the low cal day went well. I don't go as low as the book recommends, but this system seems to be working for me - I'm down 500 gr today at 56.6 kg. If we continue to follow the pattern of fluctuations that seems to be emerging, we'll be down to a new low on Friday.

More interesting and really far more valuable than the weight loss (after all, I'm around my goal weight - yippee) are the possible health benefits of this pattern of eating. My MiL was hospitalised and had surgery this last week for cancer, completely unexpectedly (she's only 68) while my own mum, at 79, is into her 5th year of struggling with dementia. More than ever I'm reminded to eat a highly nutritious, wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. I'll be examining and re-evaluating my diet with this in mind, something I do occasionally, because although I know I make good choices I do tend to stick with a narrow range of favourite foods.

I fully agree with Kingkeld on the reason for feeling so alert on this eating plan - because when you feel real hunger, your brain goes into hunting mode. I also believe strongly that low calorie intake leads to a strong immune system because when your body isn't kept busy trying to process food it's able to expend its energies on renewal and replenishment. Finger crossed and touch wood - I am at least 20 years older than all my colleagues in my department at work yet I'm rarely ill, while they're constantly coming down with colds, flu and throat infections. I keep an eye on them during the day and see them drnking sodas (I never drink them), eating biscuits and chocolate and bread-type snacks - whereas if I have a drink at work it's water or herbal tea and my snacks are fruit, dried fruit or nuts.

The strange thing is that eating real food and cooking from scratch is seen as weird! I'm known at school amongst teachers and pupils alike as the one with the strange eating habits. There's a lot of admiration, but eating properly and avoiding all kinds of manufactured foods is unusual enough to be noticed and commented upon. Sad.

Down another 300 gr today :)

On this eating plan, I really do eat what I want on the non-fast days - often in the evening so I tend not to record the calories here! Last night I had a further half portion of dinner, followed by a mini magnum (150 cal)for dessert and a few squares of chocolate later on. I have to admit that that's pretty typical lately, and although there are quite big fluctuations on the scale between fast days the general trend is slowly and surely downwards.

In addition, the eating plan is really paying off in terms of feelings of well-being. I feel lighter, sharper, more energetic and if I were able to measure it, I'd say I'm achieving more in each day and feeling more organised and less overwhelmed. I know it may seem crazy attributing this to a diet but the fast days really do seem to affect my brain so I feel more focussed.
